Ise Ebi: 2 million

Known more commonly in the west as Japanese spiny lobster, this is doubtless one of the most famous delicacies throughout Japanese. It can be eaten either cooked or raw, and make sure to keep the shell—it’s a prized ingredient in many soup broths! Harvesting is limited to October to April in order to prevent overfishing. Wherever you find Ise ebi, you’re bound to encounter all kinds of other delicious fresh seafood; don’t be afraid to give everything a try!

Ise Shrine:
Ise Shrine is the largest, most famous, and most important shrine in all of Japan. Ise Shrine is devoted to the sun goddess Amaterasu, and it’s said that all the gods of Japan often gather there. As such, many believe that the entire area is imbued with a mysterious spiritual power; some even think that plants in the Ise area grow faster and bigger than usual. And if it happens to rain when you visit the shrine, don’t be discouraged—rain is seen as a sign that the gods are happy and welcoming you in! While you’re in the area, be sure to visit some of the many other shrines in Ise; in particular, we highly recommend Meoto Shrine.
